Part of: The job of a bassist - The instrument I
Continuing with the components of low, then those that directly affect the sound:
Strings . The bass strings are tuned (from top) in E (E), La (A), Re (D) and Sol (G) (in the form of four strings, and ordered the 4 th-1). For the low of five or six strings, the tuning is added Si (B) and C (C) accordingly. However it is not uncommon to find other tunings as well as more low strings.
There are three basic types of string bass: roundwound , flatwound , halfwound .
roundwound . are the most common, have a 'twisted' round. They give a bright sound that is sustained for longer after the string down ( sustain ).
flatwound . of twisted plane. They provide a sound off and with less " sustain."
Halfwound . not used as much as the previous two types and are a hybrid, with the top half of the flat braid rope twisted the bottom of normal.
Other less commonly used types of rope, as groundwound and tapewound .
Groundwound . circular twisted ropes which have been sanding it until it was flat.
Tapewound . twisted ropes generally circular coated nylon, which helps give them a darker tone and feel more pleasant, like the strings of twisted plane.
For fretless (fretless) is recommended to use strings " flatwound" , otherwise friction damage the wood of the neck. Fretted bass often used the " roundwound " without much problem, but can also be used " flatwounds " to try a darker tone, as many bassists country. Of course, to play slap or get a metal are more appropriate "roundwound ."
strings also have a characteristic thickness at which when pressed, give a distinctive sound, for the first string (thinnest) is normal thickness: 0.04 "(1 mm) to the second string is: 0.06 "(1.5 mm) for the third string: 0.08 "(2 mm) for the fourth string: 0.1" (2.5 mm) and the fifth string is: 1.3 "(3.3 mm); thickness may vary depending on use, eg thinner strings are used to slap, because these have a thickness much more appropriate for this technique.
pickups and microphones . takes a pill to transform string vibrations into electrical impulses using the principle of electromagnetic induction. The tablet is composed of a magnet (core), which reinforces the current induced in the pickup and a winding. By double magnet technique (placing two magnets with coils of rope) is used to remove background noise that can cause other electronic devices.
So all they do is to transform the vibration of the strings into electromagnetic impulses that are sent via cable to the amplifier to transform them into sound. Nothing more ...
... And nothing less. This is the first element of a whole series of them leading to sound good. The choice of the pill, will be central to determining how it will play the bass. To select a pill must take into account one thing: that we seek depends on the sound, a kind of pill would be more appropriate than another. And this, clearly, depending on the style of music to be played. If you are going to play thrash-metal, for example, need different sound characteristics that used to play salsa.
Basically there are 4 types of pills: single-coil, humbucker , stacked humbucker and soapbar .
Single-coil . The simple design and sound pure. They are the classic pads you see in any Jazz Bass with one another near the bridge and closer to the mast, but the first Precision (1951 - 1957) took this one type. Saca means very attached and very well defined treble. On the other hand, are likely to collect unwanted hum from transformers or stage lights.
Humbucker. basically as two single-coil stuck next to each other, with windings in opposite directions and funkiest one of the magnets reversed. This design eliminates the hum, and it gets dark, powerful sound with less acute than a single-coil .
Split-coil . The humbucker can also have a design type split (divided), where the pill is split into two halves. This can be seen in any Precision back to 1957.
Stacked humbucker. looks like a single-coil, but in reality are two, one mounted on the other to eliminate hum. Not generate a sound as thick as a humbucker typical, although its sound is still great and retain many of these qualities.
Soapbar . Literally, "soap", because the rectangular shape of the plastic. Below this may be a single-coil a humbucker , or ... see you to know. This is more space for active pre-amp or larger magnets for powerful sound inside the case.
Unlike the guitar which is normally carried out with nails and fingers, or straws (also known as picks, plectrums, pens, or join English pics) plastics, or a combination of the three, the bass is generally played with the fingertips. Still, there are other ways to run, highlighting the slap strike the strings with the thumb, pop stretching or pinching (pizzicato) strings, using the fingertips, or tap , supporting fingertips on the strings against the fingerboard. Can also be played with a pick, and even sometimes use sticks or metal rods to hit the strings.
The next release will be about the calibration and customization of the bass.
